Line Test on Graph

  2. See if a vertical line intercepts one or more points on the graph.

If the line intercepts only one point, that means the graph is a function.

If the line intercepts more than one point, it is not a function but rather a relation.

Example of graphs that are not functions

  • Circle Graph
  • Any graphs that have more than one y-value for a single x-value. (Example x = 2 but x has more than one y value which is not a function.)

Example of graphs that are functions

  • Any graphs that have "function" name. (Ex Linear Function)
  • Graphs that have one x and one y value.
