New England had poor soil and teh season for farming was short. it was difficult with all the stones in the way as well. they only farmed enough for them to eat and live off of, but over time it expanded.

The soil back then was not healthy or useful that much. People could barley even get enough to time to plant one crop.. so due to this farmers had to stick to substance farming and that’s what prevented farmers from growing cash crops
