Answer: x = 40, y = 50

Explanation:

By the corresponding angles theorem,

  • 3x - 15 = 105
  • 3x = 120 [add 15 to both sides]
  • x = 40 [divide both sides by 3]

Thus, because the (3x-15) and (y+25) angles are supplementary,

  • 3x - 15 + y + 25 = 180
  • 3(40) - 15 + y + 25 = 180 [substitute x = 40]
  • 130 + y = 180 [combine like terms]
  • y = 50 [subtract 130 from both sides]
