If DH = (4x + 10) in. and HI = (2x − 4) in., then x =_______ , HI =_______ , and ID = _________

Answer:

x = -7

HI = -18

ID = -36

Explanation:

I'm guessing that H is the midpoint, so that would mean DH = HI.

So plug in.

4x + 10 = 2x - 4 (subtract 2x on both sides)

2x + 10 = -4 (subtract 10 on both sides)

2x = -14 (divide by 2 on both sides)

x = -7

PLUG IN TO GET ID because DH + HI = ID

4(-7) + 10 + 2(-7) - 4 (simplify)

-28 + 10 -14 - 4 (collect like terms)

-46 + 10 = -36

ID = -36

HI = 2(-7) -4 (simplify)

HI = -14 -4

HI = -18
