convert to mixed number...


8(3)/(4) = (35)/(4)


3 (1)/(2) = (7)/(2) or
(14)/(4)


(35)/(4) -(14)/(4)=(21)/(4)


(21)/(4) =5(1)/(4)

therefore,
5(1)/(4) gallons are left in Ms. Mather's fuel tank
