the number is 22

Explanation:

let the number be x

-5(x-17) = -25

-5x + 85 = - 25

-5x = - 25 - 85

-5x = - 110

x = - 110 ÷ - 5

x = 22

Check answer

- 5 × ( 22) + 85

- 110 + 85

- 25

(X-17)-5=-25
Divide by -5
X-17= 5
Add 17 to both sides
X=22
