the product of one secant's external part and that entire secant is equal to the product of the other secant's external part and that entire secant, that is

17(17 + x) = 12(12 + 20)

289 + 17x = 12 × 32 = 384 ( subtract 289 from both sides )

17x = 95 ( divide both sides by 17 )

x ≈ 5.6 ( to the nearest tenth )
