Explanation:

x * (x - 2) = 28

x^2 - 2x = 28

Solving by completing the square:

(x - 1)^2 - 1 = 28

(x - 1)^2 = 29

x = +/-√29 + 1

x = 6.38516, -4.38516

x must be positive so it = 6.38516.

The shortest side = x - 2 = 4.385.
