What’s the distance 3 1/4 and -15

Explanation:

The easiest way to do this is to start at 0 and go 3 1/4 units to your right.

Then start at 0 and go -15 units to your left. So far I have not used a formula because I want you to see intuitively what the answer is. Then we'll do it with a formula.

The total distance is 3 1/4 + 15 = 18 1/4. Purists will hate the way I've done it, but beginners should understand what they are doing.

A formula would look like this

distanace = sqrt( x2 - x1 )^2 + (y2 - y1)^2 )

distance = sqrt( (3 1/4 - - 15)^2 + (4 - 4)^2 )

distance = sqrt( (18 1/4 )^2 + 0)

distance = 18 1/4
