Back in the day before the bible was translated only those fluent in latin were able to read and understand the bible. because of this, The priests who interpreted the bible could do so without being criticized and often interpreted the bible in ways that benefited them. This was a big power dynamic issue. During that time as well, the churches would sell slips of paper called 'indulgences' for a lot of money claiming these certificates abolished all of the sins of the buyer and would secure them a place in heaven.
