64 - (16/3)= 208/3

I need help understanding HOW the answer to this is 208/3. Please give an explanation ASAP!!

Explanation:

I think the problem may be written incorrectly. For this to be correct, it must be 64- (-16/3) = 208/3.

To get 203/3 you have to find a common denominator because in order to subtract (or add) fractions, they must have the same denominator.

However, 64 does not have the same denominator as -16/3!!

We can write 64 as 64/1, and to give it the same denominator as -16/3, we need to multiply the denominator by 3

BUT we have to do the same thing to the numerator!!! We can't only change the denominator. If one changes, the other has to change too.

So lets multiply the numerator and denominator by 3. 64 x 3 = 192

1 x 3 = 3

Now we have 192/3

Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding. So instead we can write 192/3 + 16/3

Add 192 and 16 to get 208, so now you have 208/3

To make it easier divide 208/3, which is 69.3. Importantly, divide -16 by 3 which is 5.3. Now solve 64- (-5.3), which equals 69.3
