A golf ball is hit with an initial velocity of 100 feet per second. The height of the golf ball can be represented by the equation h=100t−16t^2, where t is the time in seconds since the ball was hit and h is the height of the ball in feet. How long will it take for the ball to hit the ground?

Answer:

  • 6.25 seconds

Explanation:

Using the the equation

  • h = 100t − 16t^2

The ball hits the ground, when h = 0, solving below equation:

  • 100t − 16t^2 = 0
  • 4t(25 - 4t) = 0
  • t = 0 seconds, this is the starting point when ball was hit
  • 25 - 4t = 0 ⇒ 4t = 25 ⇒ t= 25/4 = 6.25 seconds later the ball hits the ground
