There are multiple facts that can justify that two molecules shows difference in their ability to pass through a membrane:

- Size and molecular weight
- Receptors on the membrane and the molecules
- Structure of the membrane
- Membrane affinity

Different molecules have different solubility depending upon the type of molecule and membrane.
