First, you have to convert the fraction into like denominators. 5 and 4 have the number 20 in common. To get to 20, 5 must be multiplied by 4 so the numerator (1) is also multiplied by 4. Now 1/5=4/20. To get to 20, 4 must be must be multiplied by 5 so the numerator (3) is also multiplied by 5. Now 3/4=15/20. Finally you subtract, 4-15= -11. REMEMBER!! Do not subtract the denominators!!! You can use a number line to help you, but I used a calculator/google. You can't simplify -11/20, so your final answer is -11/20.
