There are 3 zeros in 1000. If you are multiplying, move the decimal place over however many places to the right that there are zeros. For example,

4.56 x 1000

45.6 x 100

456 x 10

4560 x 1

We moved the decimal place to the right one every time we removed a zero.

This method is extremely useful for multiplying by 1, 10, 100, etc.
