An arrow is shot horizontally at a speed of 40m/s from a bow held 3.0 meters above the ground it misses the target and hits the ground.

(a) With g = 9.80 m/s² as the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity, the arrow will the ground at time t for

0 = 3.0 m - 1/2 g t²

Solve for t :

t² = (6.0 m) / g

t ≈ 0.78 s

(b) The arrow travels a horizontal distance x at time t according to

x = (40 m/s) t

so that when it hits the ground, it does so

x = (40 m/s) (0.78 s) ≈ 31 m

away from where it was shot.
