When writing

the equation of a line in slope-intercept
form, how can you determine the value of
m in y = mx + b if you know the coordinates
of two points on the line?

Slope is rise over run meaning the difference in y coordinates over the difference in x coordinates. If you have two points you have:

(x1,y1) and (x2,y2) this makes

m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)
