Horizontal asymptotes occur when x is big in the positive direction or negative direction. With exponents, a^x is very close to zero for large negative numbers, and this is where the horizontal asymptotes are. Since the exponent is really close to zero, you remove it from the equation.

So the formula for a is y = 4

and for b is y = -3
