2(x+4) -6 = 5x-17

2x + 8 - 6 = 5x - 17

8 -6 + 17 = 5x - 2x

2 + 17 = 3x

19 = 3x

divide both side by the coefficient of x which is 3

19/3 = 3x/3

x = 19/3

x = 6 1/3. or 6.33
