Surface area of a rectangular prism = 2(LW + WH + LH)

Volume of a rectangular prism = L × W × H

where:

  • W = width (of base)
  • L = length (of base)
  • H = height

Given:

  • W = 8 ft
  • L = 15 ft
  • H = 9 ft

Surface area = 2(15 × 8 + 8 × 9 + 15 × 9)

= 2(120 + 72 + 135)

= 2(327)

= 654 ft²

Volume = 15 × 8 × 9

= 120 × 9

= 1080 ft³

Part (b)

Surface Area will help the shed maker know how much metal is needed.

Part (c)

Volume can be used to find out how much the shed holds.
