Two trains traveling the same speed leave the city. The southbound train reaches its destination in 45 minutes. The eastbound train reaches its destination in one hour. how fast were the trains traveling if their destinations are 88 miles apart.​

Let the speed be x mph

The distances are

  • 45/60x= 3/4x
  • and
  • x

The line connecting the two destinations is the hypotenuse of the right triangle with legs of 3/4x and x, which is 88 miles

Then we can put it as expression and solve for x:

  • (3/4x)² + x² = 88²
  • 9/16x² + x² = 88²
  • 25/16x² = 88²
  • 25x² = 4²*88²
  • (5x)² = 352²
  • 5x = 352
  • x = 352/5
  • x = 70.4 mph
