For example, find the LCD of 12 and 16:

12 = 2 * 2 * 3

16 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2

There are 2 pairs of 2's in the list so only 2 of these four are included in the calculation. All other factors are included.

The LCD is:

2 * 2 * 2 * 2 * 3

= 16*3

= 48.

Find the LCD of 3 and 6

6 = 2 * 3

3 = 3

- so only one of the 3's is included:

LCD = 2*3 = 6.

to find the least common denominator list out the multiples of both denominator until you find the smallest multiple that is shared by both

4: 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,

7:14,21,28,35,

because 28 is the first shared multiple of 4 and 7,it most be the least common denominator for these two fractions.
