5. Joe is mixing 40 ounces of a 25% glucose solution with a 50% glucose

solution. This mixture produces a 40% glucose solution. How many ounces
of the 50% solution is Joe using in the mixture?

Explanation:

Let the number of ounces of the 50% solution be x

mathematically;

25% of 40 ounces + 50% of x ounces = 40% of (x + 40) ounces

Therefore;

25/100 * 40 + 50/100 * x = 40/100 * (x + 40)

0.25 * 40 + 0.5(x) = 0.4(x + 40)

10 + 0.5x = 0.4x + 16

0.5x - 0.4x = 16 - 10

0.1x = 6

x = 6/0.1

x = 60 ounces
