A wallet containing $40 has three times as many $1 notes as $5 notes.

Let x = the number of $5 notes.

30 £1 notes

and

10 £5 notes

Explanation:

There is 3 times as many 1s than 5s.

If 5s is represented as x, and there are 3 times as many 1s than 5s, we can call the 1s 3x.

Now we put this in a ratio of 3x : x

By dividing both sides by x, the ratio becomes 3 : 1

3 add 1 is 4, so there are 4 parts in the ratio.

40 divided by 4 is 10, so each part of the ratio is worth 10

The ration is now 3 x 10 : 1 x 10

or

30 : 10

Therefore, there are:

30 £1 notes

and

10 £5 notes
