Abigail Adam's letters were written to urge John Adams, her husband, to keep his wives and the wives of all men apart of the Continental Congress in mind as they prepared to declare independence from Great Britain.
1. “Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands,” meaning do not give husbands power over women and their wives, specifically unlimited power not held by legal restrictions.
2. “Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation,” meaning if women are not allowed to be a part of or have a voice in democracy, then they could and will make a rebellion against them.
3. "Men of Sense in all Ages abhor those customs which treat us only as the vassals of your Sex. Regard us then as Beings placed by providence under your protection and in imitation of the Supreme Being make use of that power only for our happiness," meaning that sensible men hate the idea of treating women as objects, property, or slaves, and that John Adam's must use his power to bring women fairness and equality in order for them to be happy.
I hope these reasons do you well! Happy learning friend :)
