Explanation:

Let the weight of turkey he bought be x pounds.

Then we have the equation:

x + 3 1/8 + 1 3/4 = 6

x = 6 - 3 1/8 - 1/ 3/4

Converting to improper fractions

x = 6 - 25/8 - 7/4

We could use a calculator to do this but it also can be done manually by converting all amounts to fractions with denominator 8:

x = 48/8 - 25/8 - 14/8

= 9/8

= 1 1/8 pounds.
