A ribbon is 5 4/5 yards long. Mae needs to cut the ribbon into pieces that are 4/5 of a yard long. How many pieces of ribbon can she cut?

so five 5/5 - 1/5 each = 4/5, 4/5, 4/5, 4/5, 4/5 so we now have five 4/5 + the 4/5 we had at the beginning so we have six 4/5 then add all of the 1/5 we took away from all of the 5/5 so 1/5 x 5 = 5/5 = 4/5 Remainder 1/5 so we now have seven 4/5 and an extra 1/5

so, in conclusion, Mae can cut seven pieces of ribbon.

The answer is 7 pieces.

If you divide 5.80 (5 4/5) by 0.80 (4/5), you get 7.25. Since Mae probably doesn't want to use a piece of ribbon smaller than the others she will only cut 7 pieces.
