Cave walls have a lot of texture. Why are painting on them considered 2D art?

Art in 2D is limited to one surface.

Early societies could not create 3D art.

Anything that is not sculpture is 2D art.

Texture is one of the elements of design.

Texture is one of the elements of design. The walls of a cave have TEXTURE, so if the walls of a cave is your canvas, therefore it doesn’t count as the painting itself I suppose. :)
