Furthermore, people who smoke or consume soda, caffeinated drinks, or alcohol can consume much less calcium because these substances interfere with the body's ability to absorb and use calcium. Bone calcium levels start to drop in young adulthood, and people, particularly women, lose bone density as they get older. Teenagers, mostly girls, whose diets lack the nutrients needed to repair bones to their full capacity are more likely to develop osteoporosis, a bone condition that raises the likelihood of fractures due to weakening bones.
