During the British Renaissance, literature used death a lot as a theme, due to the plague epidemic. Although the Renaissance works portrayed death as something more scientific and proof, Donne decided to portray this theme as a more religious way that managed to maintain the Renaissance pattern, but put God as someone who is in control of death. So he wrote "Meditation 17". He was very ill at that time which made the poem very personal and profound, as he believed he was going to die. This was also influenced by the Renaissance guidelines that placed man at the center of the entire work.
