First, we want to just rid of the whole numbers,

1/3 + 1/6

when adding two fractions we need to change there denominators so they are the same. The way we do this is by changing the numerator with the denominator.

1/3 also equals 2/6 they are the same thing but now it puts it in terms so that it's easier to solve.

2/6 + 1/6 = 3/6

Now that we added the fractions we can bring back our whole numbers

5 + 3 = 8 + 3/6 = 8 3/6

So our answer is 8 3/6 but it can be simplified to 8 1/2.
