Explanation:

the | | is the absolute value bars. this basically "takes away" all negative values and turns them to positive. these bars mean that instead of counting WHERE on the number line it is, you count how many boxes it is from the origin (0,0). for ex: the absolute value of -2 = 2. BECAUSE there is 2 units between -2 and 0,0. does that make sense? in your problem, the absolute value of -5= 5 because there are 5 units between -5 and 0
