A truck can be rented from company A for $130 a day plus $0.20 per mile. Company B charges $50 a day plus $0.60 per mile to rent the same truck. Find the number of miles in a day at which the rental costs for company A and company B

Company A

  • Daily charge = $130
  • Per mile = $0.20
  • x miles per day = 130 + 0.2x

Company B

  • Daily charge = $50
  • Per mile = $0.60
  • x miles per day = 50 + 0.6x

Assume x miles that makes same amount for both options, then:

  • 130 + 0.2x = 50 + 0.6x
  • 0.6x - 0.2x = 130 - 50
  • 0.4x = 80
  • x = 80/0.4
  • x = 200 miles
