First, imagine a line drawn from the bottom of the 3 cm section all the way across. This would leave us with two different rectangles that we can find the area of.

The first rectangle, we know the dimensions of: 6 x 3

The second rectangle, we need to figure out its height. The height of the entire figure is 8 and 3 of those centimeters are taken up by our other rectangle. Therefore, the height of the other rectangle must be 5 because 8 - 3 = 5. The dimensions, then, are 10 x 5.

6 x 3 = 18

10 x 5 = 50

50 + 18 = 68

Answer: 68 cm^2

Hope this helps!

Answer:

68 cm squared

Explanation:

Hey there!

In order to find the area of this shape, you can split the shape into two parts

(split shape is in first screenshot)

First, we need to find the new dimensions

The bigger square has dimensions 6 and 8

Multiply them together

48

This is the area for the bigger square

Now we take the smaller square

The dimensions for that are 5 and 4

Multiply them together

20

Now we add the two areas to get the total area

48 + 20

68

So, the total area of this compound shape is 68 cm squared
