Pythagorean Theorem:
\sqrt{a^(2) * b^(2)} = c^(2)

In this problem, only sides b and c are given. In this situation, since we want to find a, it's:

a^(2) = \sqrt{c^(2) - b^(2)}

a^(2) = \sqrt{10^(2) - 9^(2)}

9^(2) = 81\\10^(2) = 100

After given squared numbers are solved, now we solve for a:

a^(2) = √(100 - 81)

a^(2) = √(19)

a = 4.358 . . . :)

Answer:

√19 or 4.36 to the nearest hundredth

Explanation:

10^2 = 9^2 + x^2

x^2 = 10^2 - 9^2

x^2 = (10-9)(10+9) = 19

x = √19.
