The KGB means "Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti" which when translated to English means the Committee for State Security and they were the secret police that were charged with maintaining the security of the Soviet Union from 1954 until 1991 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. Part of the functions of the KGB was to be in charge of internal security, intelligence, and secret police functions.

The KGB was feared by Russians because not only were they a military service that functioned as foreign intelligence, counter-intelligence, they also guarded the border of the USSR, and were active in suppressing dissidents who had anti-communist ideals and promoted them. In fact, dissidents were treated almost as traitors.
