The sum of two numbers is 24. Twice the first number plus the second is 26. Find the numbers. ​

2 and 22

Explanation:

You can put them into equations:

x+y=24 and 2x+y=26

Then, for each equation solve for one of the variables. It doesn't really matter which one but I chose y here.

y=24-x and y=26-2x

Since both equations are equal to y it means that the expression on the right sides of the equal sign are equal to each other:

24-x=26-2x

From here solve for x and you are left with:

x=2

Now that you know one variable go back and plug it into an equation and solve for y. Again, it doesn't matter which one you choose, you will end up with the same answer:

(2)+y=24

So..

y=22
