First of all it is important that you know that the state judicial system works in partnership with the federal judicial system, but in an inferior and subordinate position to it. This is because the state judicial system is responsible for the legal factors of a state, while the federal judicial system is responsible for the entire national territory.

Within the federal judicial system we have:

  • The Supreme Court: is the highest authority within the judicial system of the entire country. It is responsible for specific cases in which constitutional law must be applied. It is also responsible for reviewing and supervising the activities of the national congress and the president of the republic.
  • US Courts of Appeal: They are responsible for hearing appeals related to federal agencies and the documents and activities carried out by them.
  • Special Federal Courts: They are responsible for activities related to federal taxes and policies aimed at the economy, immigrants, commerce, among others.
  • US District Courts: They are the lowest branch of the federal judicial system and are responsible for prosecuting cases of violation of federal law

Within the system of state courts we have:

  • Supreme state courts: they are similar to the supreme court, but their work is limited to state activities. They are present in each state of the confederation and are responsible for listening to the lower courts.
  • Higher courts: They judge cases of high complexity and need judgments to be resolved.
  • Special Courts: Current in a similar way to its federal version, but are focused on cases where judgments must be submitted to the family, divorce court, among others.
  • Municipal and municipal courts: They are the simplest branch of the entire judicial system and are responsible for simple and low complexity cases.
