Fran swims at a speed of 2.9 km/h in still water. The Lazy River flows at a speed of 0.1 km/h. How long will it take Fran to swim 9 km upstream?

Answer:

Fran's upstream speed (against the current):

2.9 km/hr - 0.1 km/hr = 2.8 km/hr

Fran's downstream speed (with the current):

2.9 km/hr + 0.1 km/hr = 3.0 km/hr

Using the distance formula for calculating time:

rate x time = distance

time = distance / rate

Fran's upstream time = 9 / 2.8 = 3.21 hrs

Fran's downstream time = 9 / 3.0 = 3.0 hrs
