5x + 3 = x + 11

Subtract x from both sides of the equation

5x - x + 3 = x - x + 11

4x + 3 = 11

Subtract 3 from both sides

4x + 3 - 3 = 11 - 3

4x = 8

Divide both sides by 4

i.e. 4x/4 = 8/4

x = 2
