Explanation:

-5|x + 1|+ 3 = -12

Subtract 3 from each side

-5|x + 1|+ 3-3 = -12 -3

-5|x + 1| = -15

Divide each side by -5

-5/-5|x + 1| = -15/-5

|x + 1| = 3

Since this is an absolute value, we have two solutions one positive and one negative

x+1 = 3 x+1 = -3

Subtract 1 from each side

x+1-1 = 3-1 x+1-1 = -3-1

x =2 x = -4
