The perimeter of a rectangle is 312 meters. If the length is six meters more than five times the width what are the length and the width?

Solve the problem below by:
Writing the introductory ‘let’ statement to specify what the variable x will represent (if there is more than one unknown, express each of them in terms of x).
Translating the wording of the question into a linear equation with x.
Solving the equation.
Writing the concluding statement that provides the answer to the problem.

Answer: width = 25 meters , length = 131 meters

Explanation:

Given: Perimeter = 312

Let x represent the width (w), then length (L) = 5x + 6

Perimeter = 2L + 2w

312 = 2(5x + 6) + 2(x)

312 = 10x + 12 + 2x

312 = 12x + 12

- 12 -12

300 = 12x

÷12 ÷12

25 = x

width = x = 25

length = 5x + 6 = 5(25) + 6 = 131

The width of the rectangle is 25 meters and the length is 131 meters.
