Answer:

1/3 (B)

Explanation:

The question is incomplete without the diagram as this is required to enable us find the answer to the question. Find attached the diagram used in solving the question. I would show how dilation factor is determined.

A dilation produces an image that is the same shape as the original, but with a different size. A dilation can either cause an enlargement or reduction. If the pre-image is smaller than original image, it causes a reduction. If bigger, it causes an enlargement.

Let's start with the bigger shape (in this case a rectangle)

The coordinates (x,y) starting from origin are (0,0);(0,8);

(8,9);(9,0)

For the smaller rectangle (pre-image), let's follow same direction in getting the coordinates (x,y): (0,0);(0,2.5);(2.5,3);(3,0)

We can see the coordinates of the pre-image is smaller than the original image.

Ratio of the corresponding sides of the coordinate would gives us a scale factor.

Ratio of Length (small/big) = 3/9 = 1/3 = 0.3

Ratio of breadth (small/big) = 2.5/8 = 0.3125

Since the ratios are not uniform, we would use the measurement of the length of the rectangle (image and pre-image) and find their ratios.

The pre-image is smaller than the image, it would be:

(Length of the pre-image)/(length of the image) = 3/9 = 1/3

Therefore it is shrinking.
