Sam will rent a car for the weekend. He can choose one of two plans. The first plan has an initial fee of $41.98 and costs an additional 0.16 per mile driven. The second plan has an initial fee of $51.98 and costs an additional 0.12 per mile driven. How many miles would Sam need to drive for the two plans to cost the same?

Answer:

250 miles

Explanation:

let n be the number of miles

first plan: cost = 41.98 + 0.16n

second plan: cost = 51.98 + 0.12n

for the same cost, equate the two equations above

41.98 + 0.16n = 51.98 + 0.12n

0.16n - 0.12n = 51.98 - 41.98

0.04n = 10

n = 10/0.04

n = 250
