Is our author telling us to be cautious with Maureen be aware of her true motivations, to be careful in not falling for her deceptive and charms? -What is the real reason she choose to talk to Pecola

Answer:

Maureen is pretty but has a nasty attitude. She is only admired by the boys. The other girls her age dislike her for her pride, and superiority complex. She believes the is the prettiest and wants to be the centre of attention.

Freda and Claudia initially thought she warmed up to Pecola because of the boys. They seem to take an interest in Pecola.

The real reason for instance that she spoke to Pecola was to size her up, get more information about her and put her down or make her feel inferior to her.

She wanted all the attention for herself and wanted to know if Pecola would be a challenge.

Cheers!
