Step-by-step explanation:
When the government raised the tax, Luke's family was put in a tough position. The tax have been raised three times the usual and was more than what they earned from selling the pigs.
In order to overcome this ordeal, Luke's mother decides that she was going to work in the factory. However, on hearing his mother's decision to work, Luke gets upset because there would be no one to stay with him at home.
Luke had to cope with the change by staying in his room and watch the outside world through the vents in his room once the rest of his family leaves for school and work.
