There are 5 slices of pepperoni pizza, 1 slice of sausage pizza, and 3 slices of cheese pizza left

Without looking, Mr Douglas took a slice of pizza, ate it, and then took another slice. What is the
probability of Mr Douglas eating to slices of cheese pizza?
Are the events above independent or dependent events?

Answer:

a. Probability = 1/12

b. Dependent events

Explanation:

a. The chances of Mr Douglas eating two slices of cheese pizza is given by;

There are;

Pepperoni pizza = 5

Sausage pizza = 1

cheese pizza = 3

Probability of first selecting cheese pizza = 3/(5 + 1 + 3) = 3/9 = 1/3

After the cheese pizza is selected without replacement, probability of selecting a second cheese pizza = 2/(5 + 1 + 2) = 2/8 = 1/4

Therefore, the probability of eating two cheese pizzas = 1/3 × 1/4 = 1/12

b. The events are dependent because the outcome of first eating a cheese pizza affects the probability of eating a second cheese pizza.
