Total amount paid by Tom = $20.00

The total amount he paid = 2 + 4x

Therefore,

20.00 = 2 + 4x

If you want to find the number of hours he packed we have to find x in the equation.

20.00 = 2.00 + 4x

20 .00 - 2.00 = 4x

18 = 4x

x = 18/4

x = 4.5 hours

So from the equation we could find that Tom packed for 4.5 hours.
