Estimating Population Size – Review the two approaches to estimating population size and answer the following questions.

a) If you were researching Gulf Coast ribbon snakes in Bear Creek Park and you needed to
estimate the population of ribbon snakes, what would you predict if you were able to catch 10 the first day of searching, 5 the second day, but 2 of the 5 were recaptures from the previous day?
b) If you inherited a 1000 acre ranch and wanted to estimate the number of white-tailed deer on the ranch, what would be your estimate if the local wildlife biologist told you the region has 1 deer for every 18 acres?

Answer:

b) there are 56 deer in 1000 acres of area.

Step-by-step explanation:

If a person has 1000 aces of land and a local wildlife biologist tell him that on every 18 acres only one deer is present so in 1000 acres there are 56 deer are present.

calculation;

1 deer ------ 18 acres

x --------- 1000 acres

by cross multiplication, we get

18 x = 1000

both side divided by 18, we get

x = 55.5

by rounding off we get

x = 56
