Question 6: Pretend that you are a Texas resident in May 1919. Next month, the state legislature will vote on whether to approve the 19th Amendment, which will give women the right to vote. Write a letter to Senator Clark, who represents you in the Texas Legislature, explaining why you support or oppose women’s suffrage. The letter should be three paragraphs. The first paragraph should tell about you, the writer. The second paragraph should state your position and give two solid reasons to support it. The third paragraph should say why women’s suffrage would be good or bad for the United States of America and should urge the senator to vote to yes or no on the amendment. Make sure your letter includes the date and your signature.

Answer:

May 19, 1919

Dear Senator Clark,

I have been a Texas resident for more than 20 years now. My name is ____________. I am a wife and a mother of four. I have three daughters and one son. As a mother, I want the best for my girls and when they grow up I want to raise them to be independent and strong. I want my daughters to have a say in society and be able to vote and speak their minds.

I think Texas should pass the 19th amendment because women deserve equality and a say in the United States' elections. In my opinion, women's votes can change America and who leads this country. Women's clubs all over America are spreading awareness for orphanages, funding for education, property rights for women, and much more. As a woman, I believe we are supporting our community more than men. Women all over the United States are making little changes locally which helps our communities and cities in the US grow stronger.

As a member of one of the local women's clubs, I strongly believe that women should be granted the right to vote. Women all over America are tired of sitting still and being told to be quiet. We should have a right to share our opinions with others. I strongly believe that passing the 19th amendment will improve our country as a whole.

Sincerely,

(your name)
